Learning Disabilities

Learning disabilities can make it very difficult for a student to become a self-correcting reader. It is a question of the way the brain processes information.

To illustrate, consider a dyslexic student. He is intelligent, but can't discern clear differences in speech sounds within words. He recognizes various sounds in isolation, yet it is difficult to tell them apart inside of a word. Thus he is forced to guess while reading. Let's say he doesn't know he is dyslexic. He tries hard every day. He hopes to improve. But then it's his turn to read out loud, and he trips over the words, again! Now the questions come...Why doesn't this happen to the other kids? What is wrong with me? My dad told me I was being careless, but if I slow down I still make mistakes.

Learning disabilities can hurt a student’s academic progress, and they can hurt the student’s self-image as well.

If you have a child with learning disabilities, you have already seen this play out. Whether these academic struggles are called learning difficulties, learning differences, or learning disabilities, the net effect is the same - exasperation. One solution is the use of computer software to give these struggling students the extra boost they need to make some educational strides.
